World Marathon Majors
In 2006, the five greatest marathons on the globe established a first-ever competitive racing series, World Marathon Majors. The grand and historic Boston, Virgin London, real,-BERLIN, Bank of America Chicago and ING New York City marathons are now linked as a series that awards points to the top five male and female finishers at each annual race. At the end of each two-year racing cycle that includes the IAAF World Championships and Olympic marathons, the top male and female point earners are deemed the reigning champions of the sport and equally split a million dollar prize purse.
The inaugural series began in Boston in April, 2006 and concluded at the ING New York City Marathon in November, 2007. Three complete cycles have been completed to date with the fourth champions to be announced November, 2010. View the current World Marathon Majors leaderboards.
